Here’s my definition of evangelism:

Evangelism is the communication of the Good News, in the power of the Holy Spirit, with the intention of producing repentance from dead works and faith in Jesus, resulting in an enduring faithfulness to Christ and His Body.

Do you have a better one or an improvement to this one?

All the previous definitions to my knowledge were right on point. Jesus said to honor the Father was to bear much fruit (sharing the Gospel). Evangelist save lives. God gave us the greatest example in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ perform miracles for the sole purpose to prove that sharing the Gospel will save lives.

Luke 19.10 : "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost"
Jesus is the Son of God and the Son of man. In this verse, Jesus doesn't describe Himself as the Son of God but as the Son of man…

It seems to be like a wink to our great commission : we are men and sons of men. Jesus is the One and the First, and we are together sons of men. So… "The Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost" and "the sons of men ( preachers, evangelists ) are to seek with Jesus and to lead to salvation those who are lost".
In this definition, an evangelist is a seeker and a leader ( as a shepherd is a leader ). But not an itinerate mom, because he is to lead the lost to the… Father !

Wonderful Daniel. I love Acts 26:18. Thanks for the feedback.

I am still midway through the book myself, but what intrigues me presently is that the author believes the best examples of Gospel proclamation should be drawn from Acts itself, since the Gospels are mainly "pre-cross/resurrection," and the subjects presented in the epistles are primarily written to those who have already been born from above.

So, he is convinced that Acts provides the biblical blueprint for Gospel proclamation, as well as what the apostles and evangelists of the NT expected to see as the fruit of their Gospel labors. I haven't made it all the way through yet, but it may be of interest to you in the context of this blog.

    Very well said Daniel!
Another definition would be what Jesus is calling Paul to do among the Gentiles according to Acts 26:18

"-To open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in [Jesus]"

Thank you for a wonderful and inspiering blog!

Daniel, I agree with you. Evangelism needs to be re-defined. In my opinion, repentance is very neglected in many sermons. when I see precious souls crying on their knees, because they realize the horror of their sins, I see true and real conversions. We are not "light" preachers, but preachers of light. I saw too many meetings where christians and lost had a good time, with emotional music, but without conviction of sin and without the power of the Holy Spirit, changing lives.

BP, I am somewhat familiar with the teachings in the Normal Christian Birth and I agree that they are thought provoking (although I have never read the book entirely) Perhaps I should give it a read. How do you feel the teaching lines up with this definition of evangelism?

    Daniel,

Have you ever read David Pawson's THE NORMAL CHRISTIAN BIRTH? If you have, I'd be curious to know your thoughts on it. I am reading it currently, and finding it very though provoking.

Blessing to you, brother. You're a real gift to the Body.

I feel that evangelism needs to be re-defined. Evangelists are not itinerate mom and pop musical groups…they are preachers of the Gospel…period.

    Thanks for your feedback Aymeric
